In partnership with Bib and Tucker Quilting Sew-Op, the Historic Pickensville Rosenwald School will present “The March Quilts: A Celebration of Arts and Activism” This exhibition includes a collection of quilts representing the artistry of Alabamians from across the region. The quilts tell the stories of African Americans’ experiences along the journey for freedom at national and local levels and across time.

During our opening exhibition, we will host a community sewing session. The season invites attendees to create their own quilt squares that explore the impact and lasting legacy of the Civil Rights Movement in Pickens County.

Museum curator, Dr. Kimberly Ransom (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) will lead an oral history workshop featuring the civil rights stories of various Pickens community members who lived out their childhoods in Rosenwald Schools during the Civil Rights Era. These oral histories will serve as an example of the everyday activism of children and adults who lived in the Pickens community. These stories will help community members think about the ways they (or their family members) have been involved in art and activism in Pickens. To tell their stories, participants will create their own quilt squares which will be stitched together and displayed at a later date.

Bib & Tucker Sew-Op is Birmingham’s virtual hub for sewing activities that promote empowerment, education and economic opportunity.
